Frequently Asked Questions
What ages is this program for?
- The Cranford Recreation Track & Field / Cross Country programs are designed for kids in elementary and middle school through 8th grade. Sorry NO HIGH SCHOOL student allowed
- For Track & Field, our league allows those ages 9 through 15 to compete (based on your age at the end of the calendar year).
- For Cross Country, we start at 6 years old and through 14 years old.(again based on your age at the end of the calendar year)
- For example, a child born on October 1, 2013, would compete as a 12-year-old this year.
When & Where are practices?
Practices are held every Monday & Wednesday evenings, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM at Memorial Field in Cranford, NJ, beginning March 17th through early June.
Is practice mandatory?
We know you are busy, please make your best effort to be at practices each week. If you need to miss, let us know. We have many multi sport, multi activity kids in the program.
Do we have games? meets? Is there travel?
We are members of the Lakeland Track League. Each weekend during the season, we have the opportunity to field a team to compete against other teams in the league.
The events that are contested in the league include:
- 100 meters
- 200 meters
- 400 meters
- 800 meters
- Mile Run
- 4x100 meter Relay
- Shot Put
- Long Jump
We host up to two meets, there is travel to other member teams for meets throughout the season.
No busing provided
Do we have to compete?
Competing is not mandatory but we highly encourage all athletes to compete. In our sport you competing against yourself, getting better each week. The best way to gauge your improvement is to compete in the meets provided, Plus they really are fun!
In order to be eligible for the championship meet, you must compete in at least 3 meets during the season (not counting the Relays, Open or Championship
Do we host any meets?
This year we will host 2 meets at our facility; Ray White Track @ Memorial Field. We will need volunteers to assist us in hosting 2-3 other programs at each meet. Our goal is to complete each meet in 2-3 hours.
Will we get a uniform?
Yes, as part of your registration, a uniform will be provided.
What equipment do I need?
We ask that you come ready to run, throw, and jump. Bring a water bottle, be appropriately dressed to be active, and wear a pair of running shoes (not basketball sneakers or crocs).
I need shoes, where can I go?
Our favorite local store is Fleet Feet in Westfield, NJ. They will be able to properly measure and assess your footstrike to get you in the right gear. Great for the entire family.
